Lake Babine Nation will soon see the construction of 20 new rental homes in the villages of Tachet and Wit’at. This initiative is part of a broader housing development plan by the Province, with funding from BC Builds, a program launched in February 2024 to create more rental housing. The new homes, a mix of two- and four-bedroom units, are designed to provide attainable housing for First Nations members with middle incomes, helping them stay in their communities.
The total cost of the project is $7 million, with $1.8 million in grant funding from BC Builds and $5.2 million in equity from Lake Babine Nation. The development reflects the community’s housing strategy, prioritizing the appropriate size of homes and affordable rents for Nation members.
This project is part of a larger $19-billion provincial initiative aimed at increasing housing availability, including nearly 6,800 homes for Indigenous people. Minister of Housing Ravi Kahlon emphasized the importance of culturally safe housing for Indigenous communities, stating that the new homes will offer First Nations members the opportunity to stay in their communities and strengthen cultural ties.
