Mark Carney, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, announced a series of new measures today aimed at securing Canada’s sovereignty and economic stability in light of increasing global uncertainty. With President Trump’s threats to Canadian interests, Carney emphasized the need to protect Canadian businesses, industries, and military capabilities.
Among the key initiatives is the overhaul of Canada’s defence procurement system. This includes the establishment of a new Defence Procurement Agency to streamline and centralize military equipment purchases, prioritizing Canadian-made materials like steel, aluminum, and critical minerals. Additionally, Carney plans to create the Bureau of Research, Engineering and Advanced Leadership in Science to support innovation in AI, cybersecurity, and other cutting-edge technologies for the Canadian Armed Forces.
Carney also announced plans to help Canadian defence businesses diversify their markets by expanding the CanExport program and focusing on reducing reliance on the U.S. market. He outlined further commitments to boost domestic defence industries, including supporting the ReArm Europe Plan and advancing security initiatives with NATO partners.
This announcement builds on Carney’s previous commitments, such as raising pay for Canadian Armed Forces members, modernizing recruitment, and securing Canada’s Arctic and coastlines through enhanced military and Coast Guard capabilities. A Mark Carney-led government aims to create jobs, lower taxes, and ensure Canada remains strong in the face of global challenges.
