The Prince Rupert RCMP has officially relocated to a new, state-of-the-art facility at 145 Market Place, after nearly 50 years in their previous detachment, built in 1978. The move, completed on April 10, marks the end of an era for the old building, which was deemed inadequate by both the City and the police force. The new detachment is secure, disaster-proof, and designed to accommodate future growth, with space for 36 RCMP staff and 17 municipal employees.
The City of Prince Rupert invested $25 million in the project, which was funded through debt from the Municipal Finance Authority. The development took three years, with planning beginning in 2022 when the former Jehovah’s Witness hall stood at the site. Insp. Gerald Walker, Officer in Charge, praised the new facility, noting its excellent work environment and future-proof design.
A community ribbon-cutting event will be held on April 29 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., featuring refreshments and a BBQ. This milestone reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to providing essential services for its growing community.
