The Gitxaała Nation has elected a new Chief, Deputy Chief, Youth Councillor, and four Councillors following the 2025 General Election held yesterday. Voting took place in person at Git Lax M’oon in Prince Rupert and the Band Office Board Room in Kitkatla, with online voting and mail-in ballots also contributing to the final count. A total of 568 ballots were cast.
Linda Innes was elected Chief Councillor with 238 votes, finishing 43 votes ahead of Bruce Watkinson, who received 195. Brenna Lynn Innes was elected Deputy Chief Councillor with 209 votes, narrowly defeating Elmer Moody Sr. by 18 votes.
Jamie Angus secured the Youth Councillor position with 222 votes. For Councillor, Joscelin Lewis, Gail Watkinson, Rowena Ridley, and Elliott Moody received the highest vote counts and will serve as the Nation’s four elected Councillors.
Ballot counting was conducted live on Facebook from Kitkatla on the Gitxaała Nation Facebook page, allowing members to witness the process in real time. Spoiled ballots ranged from zero to ten across the various races.
The newly elected leadership will guide the Nation for the next three years, with responsibilities including governance, development, and representing community interests both locally and beyond.
