The Skidegate Band Council has enacted an immediate nightly curfew following a fatal vehicle incident in the village. The curfew, now in effect, begins at 10 p.m. and ends at 6 a.m. daily and will remain in place until further notice. Only those commuting to and from work are exempt.
The decision came after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Front Street in Skidegate early Tuesday afternoon. RCMP responded to the call at 1:17 p.m. and confirmed the individual later died from their injuries. Authorities believe the incident was targeted, though the investigation is still in its early stages.
The North District Major Crime Unit has taken over the case and is currently en route to the community. RCMP officers will remain on the scene and are asking anyone with information, including surveillance or dashcam footage, to come forward. They’re urging residents to speak directly with police rather than share unverified details online.
The Band Council passed the curfew resolution with a quorum of its members, citing the need to protect public safety during what it describes as an emergency situation. Updates will be provided as the investigation develops.
