National Volunteer Week runs April 27 to May 3, celebrating the millions of Canadians whose efforts strengthen communities across the country. This year’s theme, Volunteers Make Waves, recognizes the deep impact volunteers have in building resilience, trust, and connection during a time of widespread uncertainty and record demand for services.
With 80 per cent of Canadians reporting a lack of strong community belonging and more than half of charities unable to meet current needs, volunteerism offers a vital path forward. Volunteering has been shown to boost individual well-being while helping communities become more cohesive and resilient.
As part of the week’s events, Volunteer Canada will host a special online conversation on May 1 with Indigenous rights advocate Autumn Peltier and Volunteer Canada President Dr. Megan Conway. The event will explore the role of volunteerism in addressing Canada’s growing social and emotional disconnect.
Volunteer Canada continues to lead the development of a National Volunteer Action Strategy aimed at revitalizing participation nationwide. More details, including how to join the May 1 event and contribute to celebrations, are available at volunteer.ca/national-volunteer-week.
