As Donald Trump escalates trade tensions, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh delivered a strong message in Winnipeg, emphasizing that Canada’s water, public healthcare, environmental protections, and Indigenous Treaty rights are not negotiable. Standing with workers, Singh warned that Trump’s “America First” agenda could pressure Canada into rolling back vital protections and exploiting public resources.
Singh committed to ensuring that critical sectors like fresh water, public infrastructure, healthcare, and domestic manufacturing are protected in future trade deals. He also stressed that Canadians’ Charter rights, labor protections, and environmental rules must remain off the table.
Singh highlighted the NDP’s role in forcing the Liberal government to make trade negotiations more transparent, including requirements for advance notice, clear objectives, and a full economic impact assessment before any trade agreement is enacted.
The NDP leader emphasized that Canada’s best defense against Trump is building domestic resilience—expanding public power, reducing costs, and creating good jobs. He proposed an East-West energy grid to strengthen regional economies, particularly leveraging Manitoba’s clean power.
Singh closed by urging voters to protect Canada’s values by electing New Democrats who will stand firm against secretive trade deals and safeguard what makes Canada unique.
