An increase in overdose incidents has been reported in Terrace, linked to purple and blue drugs. These overdoses are occurring when these substances are smoked or injected. Local health authorities, including Northern Health and the First Nations Health Authority, are urging the public to take extra precautions to prevent further harm.
Residents are advised to get trained in overdose prevention and always carry naloxone, a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. The risk of overdose is heightened when drugs are used alone, so it’s recommended to share your plans with someone you trust or use the Lifeguard app or National Overdose Response Service, both available for free. If using drugs after a period of abstinence or reduced use, it’s crucial to start with a much smaller dose to gauge tolerance.
Health officials also stress the importance of using the local Overdose Prevention Site and getting drugs tested. In case of an overdose, immediately call 911 or your local emergency services. The alert will remain in effect until May 7, 2025. For more information, residents can contact the Terrace Specialized MHSU Outreach Team at 250-631-4647.
