Ottawa is introducing new measures to address two Calls to Justice from the Final Report into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
One measure seeks to establish an independent Ombudsperson specifically to respond to complaints of rights violations from Indigenous communities and individuals.
They would also be tasked with conducting evaluations of government services, and determining their compliance with Indigenous rights laws.
Former National Inquiry Executive Director Jennifer Moore Rattray has been appointed as Ministerial Special Representative to conduct public engagement to help develop the position.
Establishing a National Indigenous and Human Rights Ombudsperson fulfills one half of Call to Justice 1.7, which also calls for the creation of a Tribunal.
Another new measure addresses Call number 1.10, which calls for the development of an independent mechanism to report on the implementation of the Calls to Justice.
Innovation 7, an Indigenous organization, has been tasked with developing recommendations to establish such a mechanism.
