Indigenous leaders from across Canada are gathering in Vancouver this week for the third National Gathering on Unmarked Burials.
Attendees will join in discussions, workshops, and sessions all focused on advancing search efforts at former residential school sites.
This year’s sessions will have a heavy focus on data sharing and sovereignty related to the transfer and ownership of relevant records and archives.
Kimberly R Murray, who was recently appointed as Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves, will host the gathering.
Her presence will give attendees a chance to provide feedback to advise the development of a new legal framework, being led by Murray.
That framework seeks to ensure the respectful and culturally appropriate treatment of unmarked graves an burial sites at former residential schools.
A three day event, the gathering will run through tomorrow evening.
