Forestry workers in BC took another blow last night after Canfor announced a restructuring of its operations.
That restructuring will include the permanent shutdown of it’s Chetwynd sawmill and pellet plant, and a temporary shutdown of its Houston sawmill.
Operations in Houston are being shut down in order transform the mill into a modern, globally competitive, manufacturing facility.
Canfor says that facility would produce high-value woo products utilizing the sustainable timber supply in the region.
A final investment decision in that project, which is currently in the planning and budgeting phase, is expected in the second quarter of this year.
Meanwhile Canfor says that they will be working with industry and Indigenous partners to ensure the fibre supply in Chetwynd is used to support local manufacturing facilities.
In total, the restructuring will reduce annual production by 750 million board feet, and will eliminate over 300 jobs.
