Recent investments in revitalizing Indigenous languages are paying off, according to a new report from the First Peoples’ Cultural Council.
Every four years since 2010, the Council has published a new report detailing the progress of language revitalization in BC.
This year’s report is the first to include data on all 34 First Nations languages in BC, and was informed by more than 140,000 participants.
It found that the number of First Nations language learners in the province grew by more than 20 percent between 2018 and 2022.
Over that time, the number of language nests for pre-school aged children has more than tripled, going from 10 to 32.
Adult learning opportunities are also on the rise, with the FPCC’s Mentor-Apprentice program growing from 27 to 150 mentors.
