One of the RCMP’s most controversial units is now under investigation by the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission.
A systemic review into the operations of the Community-Industry Response Group is being conducted, in response to over a hundred complaints.
Created in 2017, the C-IRG is tasked with addressing crime and keeping public order in incidents relating to energy projects.
In reality, they are most often deployed in response to industry opposition from Indigenous land defenders and climate activists.
Since their inception, the group has faced countless accusations of racism, harassment, unnecessary use of force, and Indigenous rights violations.
Now, the CRCC is looking to determine to whether or not the group’s activities were conducted in accordance with legal and policy standards, and to what extent.
Part of the investigation will include a comprehensive review of case files related to at least three sites.
Those include: the Coastal GasLink injunction on Wet’suwet’en Territory, the Copper Creek Cedar Injunction on Salisbury Creek Forestry Road, and the Teal Cedar Products Injunction in the Fairy Creek Watershed.
Where applicable, the review will examine consistency with UNDRIP, and the calls to justice from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Final Inquiry.
