BC has responded to calls from First Nations leaders to better support Indigenous involvement in the cannabis economy.
Last week, the First Nations Leadership Council issued a letter chastising Federal cannabis laws.
They say that, five years after legalization, Canada’s laws still do not recognize First Nations jurisdiction, or provide avenues for coordination.
In the letter, the Council called for amendments to address issues of over-taxation, jurisdiction, revenue sharing and economic development.
Now, the Province has announced $2.3 million in funding through the BC Indigenous Cannabis Business Fund to support further participation.
Funding will go towards: business planning and advisory services, workshops for First Nations communities, and helping to cover licensing and permitting costs.
That is in addition to the $7.5 million in government funding being made available for Indigenous cannabis endeavours over the next 3 years.
