Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach is calling for changes to Canada Post’s model of providing services to rural communities.
Under the current model, postmasters as required to source and provide their own location within the community to host a post office.
It’s a model that failed the community of Atlin when the general store which housed their only post office burned down last year.
Since then, Canada Post has struggled to restore services to the community, something Bachrach says isn’t unique in the northwest.
This week, Bachrach will pay a visit to Atlin to discuss their needs, and gather ideas for solutions.
He says the model is in need of an update, and that Canada Post needs to do more to provide locations, or increase the amount they’re willing to pay to secure sites.
