Industrial clients in the Northwest have shown significant interest in BC Hydro’s plans to extend their electrical transmission infrastructure west.
In January, BC Hydro launched an Expression of Interest to guage the future demand for electricity on the north coast.
That came along with plans to build a 500 kilovolt transmission line from Prince George to Terrace, which hinged largely on industrial interest.
By the time the Expression of Interest closed on April 11th, the corporation had received 29 submissions from industrial projects in the region.
They came from a range of sectors, from mining to ports, to LNG, with the majority showing significant interest in the plan.
Mining projects accounted for the largest number of submissions, while hydrogen projects accounted for the greatest future demand for electricity.
BC Hydro has already begun a project to build a series of capacitors between the two communities, increasing current capacity by 60 percent.
But they say that even that won’t be nearly enough to meet future demands from industry.
