A one time $25 million top up will more than double what the province has already invested in their Clean Coast, Clean Waters Initiative.
$4 million of that will be invested in the Coastal First Nations Great Bear Initiative to continue the support of their coastal stewardship.
Bringing together nine first nations along the coast and on Haida Gwaii, the intiative aims to improve self-suffiency and quality of life for their communities by protecting their ecosystems.
Of the remaining $21 million, successful applicants will recieve a portion for their shoreline clean up projects.
While the first intake is now complete and set to be announced next month, the next is planned for early 2024.
Eligble applicants include coastal First Nations, local governments, and non-profits with expertise on shoreline debris cleanup.
Projects that have already been completed under the initiative have resulted in removing derelict vessels and marine debris from more than 4,600 kilometres of shoreline in BC.
