Construction of the small-scale Port Edward LNG export plant could begin as soon as this Fall, according to CEO Chris Hilliard.
In an update provided to the First Nations LNG Alliance last weekend, Hilliard says the project’s three year planning phase is just about finished.
He expects the construction phase to take about 2 years, though its start date may end up being pushed into the winter instead.
Once completed, the $450 million facility is expected to produce as much as 300 tonnes of LNG per day to be shipped over seas to China.
That works out to roughly 110,000 tonnes per year, a stark contrast to the 14 million tonnes annually from LNG Canada’s first phase.
Hilliard says that the smaller scale allows them to use smaller shipping vessels and build less complicated docking facilities.
Instead, the plant will fill about 40 containers of LNG per day, which can be shipped on regular vessels, utilizing standard container docks.
