A resolution has been unanimously passed by the Union of BC Indian Chiefs denouncing what they call Métis colonialism in BC.
It also rejects assertions from Métis organizations that they hold any constitutionally protected jurisdiction over land and water in the province.
According to the Union, organizations such as the Métis Nation of BC, and BC Métis Federation regularly benefit from exploiting First Nations.
They say that the groups use tactics reminiscent of the Doctrine of Discovery and Terra Nullius to claim rights over First Nations territories.
Those claims are then used by the Provincial and Federal Governments to support Indigenous consent for major industry projects.
While the UBCIC takes no issue with the Métis Nation or people, they say there is no justification for Métis jurisdiction over land and water in BC.
Both the First Nations Summit and BC Assembly of First Nations will consider similar resolutions at upcoming meetings.
