Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach is among a pair of MPs calling on Ottawa to end the chronic underfunding of rural post offices.
In 1994, the Federal Government placed a moratorium on closing rural post offices, but Canada Post has since shut down more than 350 offices.
Under the current model, local postmasters are required to source and provide their own location to host an office within the community.
Bachrach, and fellow MP Gord Johns, say that Canada Post then refuses to provide adequate funding, forcing them to essentially close.
It’s an issue which Bachrach witnessed first hand when he visited Atlin last month.
They have been without a post office since the old one burned down last year, after being unable to find a location within Canada Post’s budget.
Now, Bachrach and Johns are calling for a change in policy to ensure rural communities are not forgotten.
