Schools across BC will, for the first time, have the option to teach the Dakelh language in their classrooms next year.
On Monday, the Ministry of Education officially approved a Dakelh language curriculum in an effort to revive the endangered tongue.
Developed by the Prince George and Quesnel School Districts, alongside local First Nations, the curriculum covers pre-kindergarten to grade 12.
But, with many dialects of the language existing across the province, it leaves room to be adapted to fit each community.
As such, the steering committee for the curriculum included the Lheidli T’enneh, Lhtako Dene, Lhoosk’uz Dene, Nazko, and Ulkatcho Nations.
Now, all schools will have the tools necessary to teach the language, should they opt to do so, as early as next school year.
