Tll Yahda Energy in Haida Gwaii has been recognized for their transition away from diesel use.
For their collaborative efforts, the group was named Community of the Year at the 2023 Clean Energy BC conference.
The partnership of the Old Massett Village Council, the Skidegate Band Council, and the Council of the Haida Nation has been in place since 2018.
Their most recent achievement is a two megawatt solar farm, which is in the final construction stages at the Massett airport.
For a total of $8.5 million, the solar farm is expected to reduce diesel usage by 8.5 percent, reducing their carbon load by over 1,700 tonnes per year.
That project is just one component of the group’s plan to erase diesel emissions by 2030 completely.
According to the implementation manager for the group Sean Brennan, if Haida Gwaii achieves that goal, it would help BC with their goal of reducing emissions by 40 percent by 2030.
