Members of the First Nations Leadership Council are calling for the resignation of the Minister of Child and Family Development.
Minister Mitzi Dean has been called out by the FNLC for what they deem an inadequate response to the abuse of First Nations children in foster care.
Their calls come following the June 16th sentencing of two former foster parents who are facing 10 years in prison for manslaughter and aggravated assault.
Allegedly, MCFD had not checked on the two children in their care for seven months.
Regional Chief Terry Teegee of the BC Assembly of First Nations, compared the tragedy to the 2001 death of Savannah Hall.
Chief Teegee says that despite the 17 recommendations made to MCFD following that case, the systemic oversight and negligence continue.
The FNLC also calls on the province to actively commit to the recommendations that would come from a systematic investigation that led to the two children’s deaths.
