A contract has been set and signed to bring the new Dawson Creek and District Hospital plans to fruition.
Graham Design Builders LP has been named the proponent of the contract, taking over design and construction.
That work is slated to start July this year with substantial completion estimated for fall 2026, and patients accepted in 2027.
Construction plans include approximately 24,500 square metres and 24 new beds, while the emergency department will get 5 new spaces.
Mental health services will be brought to modern standards with 18 beds over the current 15, as well as a new perinatal unit, physical rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging and more.
The province says that local First Nations are being consulted to ensure cultural safety and will offer a neutral spiritual room.
A total $590 million cost will be split between Northern Health and the Peace River Regional Hospital District, who will contribute $177 million of that.
Meanwhile, the current hospital will remain in use during construction and so far, future use of the site is undetermined.
