Quesnel has taken a new approach to wildfire prevention.
Since June 18, the city has employed 132 goats to eat their way around the Fuel Management Trails, which will continue for the next 2 weeks.
According to the city, the idea stemmed from wanting to avoid the emissions of usual fuel management tactics like mowing and brushing equipment, pesticides or herbicides.
Quesnel’s Forestry Initiatives Program is working in conjunction with the Vahana Nature Rehabilitation, who supplies the team of goats.
Erin Robinson, manager of the forestry initiatives says that the goats are strategically moved to reduce grass and vegetation that will dry out, as well as invasive plants.
Any residents who wish to watch the goats work can head to the Fuel management trail parking lot off Quesnel Hixon Road from 9am to 12 pm and from 3 pm to 5 pm on June 27th and 28th.
