A Polynesian canoe on a 47 month mission to inspire a better future for the Earth is set to make a stop in Prince Rupert this afternoon.
Hōkūle‘a is a traditional, double-hulled, Polynesian voyaging canoe, making its 15th major journey in its first 50 years.
Together with Hikianalia, it will travel more than 43,000 nautical miles during the trip, visiting 36 countries, and stopping at 345 ports.
Its ultimate goal is to connect Pacific communities for collective action to tackle shared priorities and bring millions of learners together.
Crew members have been traversing southeast Alaska for the past two months, leaving Haida Gwaii on Wednesday.
They will take port at the Cow Bay breakwater at 4:00 this afternoon, where they will be met by a contingent of local Indigenous leaders.
From there they plan to make additional stops in Hartley Bay, Bella Bella, and Port Hardy, weather permitting.
