Anglers on the west coast are being warned of increasing reports of whale depredation in the waters around the State of Washington.
Whale depredation refers to the removal of fish from human-placed fishing gear by killer and sperm whales as a means to find food.
It is a learned behaviour, and can lead to loss of catch and gear, and increases the likelihood of injuring or entangling the whales.
Incidents of depredation have been reported in BC by groundfish longline fisheries, salmon troll fisheries, and recreational anglers.
Depredation reports in BC are not on the rise, but with increased reporting in Washington and Alaska, the DFO is looking to help keep it that way.
Anglers can prevent its spread by waiting for whales to pass before hauling gear, and by avoiding directly or indirectly feeding them.
All incidents should be reported to the DFO at 1 800 465 4336, or by emailing at mammals.marine@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.
