Port workers in BC will be taking the 8:00 shift off tomorrow morning to vote on whether or not to ratify a new collective bargaining agreement.
According to the BC Maritime Employers Association, that agreement is the same as the settlement proposed by federal mediators last week.
This time, however, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union’s leadership caucus say they will be recommending ratification.
Initially, the caucus had decided against bringing the settlement to members for a vote, leading to a brief renewal of strike activities.
But, that was quickly ruled illegal due to lack of notice, resulting in a second strike notice being issued, which would be rescinded hours later.
Upon convening the Incident Response Group, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the failure to present the settlement to members unacceptable.
It had been reached following a 13 day strike, which cost the country hundreds of millions in trade.
Members of the caucus said they denied the deal due to its length, lack of job protections, and failures to address cost-of-living concerns.
