An open letter from the Union of BC Indian Chiefs calls on Canada to co-develop legislation to reduce the impacts of factory farming.
Last month, the UBCIC unanimously passed a resolution which rejects the current legal and regulatory landscape of factory farming in Canada.
It points to a lack of accountability and oversight of generally accepted farming practices and animal protections, and a lack of animal welfare funds.
Now, they are calling for BC and Canada to co-develop new legislation and regulations with First Nations, in line with their rights.
Those would focus on reducing the impacts on habitats and the climate, reducing disease risks, and providing funds to transition to better practices.
They are also calling for government to work with First Nations farmers and ranchers to help them recover from natural disasters and habitat degradation.
