Skeena- Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach is calling on Ottawa to help support farmers in Northwest BC impacted by this summer’s drought.
A rapid spring snow-melt and lack of precipitation since has had most of BC facing dangerously high drought conditions for over a month.
Currently, drought levels are set to 5, the most severe step on the province’s scale, for the vast majority of the north east of Terrace.
That has led to widespread crop failures and soaring hay prices for dairy and beef producers, in a region where agriculture is vital to the economy.
While BC introduced the Access to Feed program to help match farmers with hay sellers domestically and internationally, Ottawa has stayed pat.
Now, Bachrach has penned a letter to ne Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay requesting direct federal funding assistance to save northern BC farms.
