Officer Who Injured Woman During Arrest in Kitimat Acted Lawfully and Reasonably, According to Investigation

An RCMP officer who injured a woman while conducting an arrest in Kitimat was reasonably conducting his duties, according to a new report.

Released by the BC Independent Investigations Office, the report follows a review launched just days after the March 26th incident.

RCMP were initially called out to the residence during a small gathering to remove a pair of unruly and intoxicated guests.

When an officer attempted to arrest one of the individuals, she asked to go back inside to gather her belongings.

But according to the officer, when he approved her request, she told him not to touch her and swung a fist, knocking his radio off its holder.

He says he then performed a leg sweep to take down the woman and arrest her, during which she suffered a fractured ankle.

Due to the non-compliance and presence of intoxicated individuals, the IIO determined that the move was lawful and reasonable.

As a result, they will not be referring the matter to Crown counsel for consideration of charges.
