After overcharging the Nation on electrical fees for the past 8 years, BC Hydro has been ordered to refund the Gitga’at First Nation nearly $700,000.
In 2014, the Nation entered into an Electricity Services Agreement with BC Hydro to provide service to their remote community in Hartley Bay.
But, in addition to the standard service rates paid by the Nation, the corporation had also been collecting an annual fee of $85,000.
Noticing this, the Nation filed a complaint with the BC Utilities Commission to look into the annual charge last April.
After reviewing the terms of the agreement, the Commission determined they had never approved the extra charge, and found it unenforceable.
As a result, they have ordered Hydro to pay the Nation the $693,000 collected through the extra charge since 2014, plus interest within six months.
