A mining operation proposed on Tahltan territory has been denied its permit after receiving strict opposition from the Nation.
Torr Metals had been looking to receive their mineral exploration permit for their Latham Property, located in the Gnat Pass region.
But their application triggered an engagement clause under a Shared Decision Making Agreement between the Tahltan Central Government and BC.
After extensive community engagement, the TCG rejected the project, noting that it was planned for a culturally significant portion of their territory.
Now, the province has followed suit in a move the Nation calls supportive of their inherent jurisdiction over Tahltan lands and waters.
But they also denounced the outdated Mineral Tenures Act, noting the province has historically approved 24,000 claims on their territory without consent.
