Terrace served as the backdrop this weekend as Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh announced his plans to deal with rising grocery costs.
Singh was joined by Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach, who spoke with numerous families struggling to make ends meet during the trip.
He says many residents are astounded at how difficult it has become to afford to feed their families, compared to just a few years ago.
While the costs of food have outpaced inflation for 21 straight months, Canada’s three largest grocery chains earned over $3.6 billion last year.
But, Singh says that, despite that, the Liberals and Conservatives have done nothing to challenge their CEOs until the past couple of months.
If passed, it would allow the bureau to issue increased fines for price-fixing and gouging, and force companies to lower unfair prices.
It would also close loopholes which allow the biggest chains to price-out competition.
