Today is a day for Canadians to recognize the plight faced by Indigenous women and work toward a future free of gender-based violence.
October 4th marks the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit and gender diverse people.
Despite accounting for less than 5 percent of Canada’s population, Indigenous women make up nearly a quarter of all homicide victims.
This day marks an opportunity not only to raise awareness for the issue, but to look into the causal factors of the on-going tragedy.
Those include generations of harm inflicted by colonial practices and decades of systemic racism among both the public and institutions.
It also comes just over four years after the MMIWG Final Report brought forward 231 calls for justice to address the issues.
Today, residents are asked to call local politicians to bring light to the lack of action to date, hang a red dress from a tree or window, or amplify the message online.
