Skeena Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach is wondering why it’s taking so long to fund a number of critical infrastructure projects in the Northwest.
Bachrach questioned new infrastructure minister Sean Fraser on the issues plaguing northern communities during committee meetings yesterday.
Chief among the concerns is Prince Rupert’s aging water infrastructure, which has been on the verge of a complete collapse for months.
But, despite applying for the Federal disaster mitigation and adaptation fund early in the year, the City has yet to hear back from Ottawa.
While Fraser could not confirm the approval of funding, he did say that this kind of project was exactly what the fund was designed for.
Bachrach also brought up concerns the City of Terrace has over the success of its application to build 180 new houses in the community.
With a population of 12,000, the City just slides into the Urban bracket of the Housing Accelerator Fund, rather than the rural bracket.
While that has officials concerned they may be overlooked in favour of larger Cities, Fraser assured Bachrach that smaller communities would receive fair consideration.
