Annual Cone Zone campaign now underway for Road Safety Week

The cone zone campaign is now underway for Road Safety week in Canada (May 14- 20), an annual reminder for drivers to slow down and pay attention in order to protect roadside workers.

CFNR spoke with Trace Acres, program director for Road Safety at Work, who says that drivers need to be aware of and follow the driving laws in roadside work zones, including slowing down and moving over when passing emergency situations or flashing lights.

Distraction, particularly cell phone use, is a serious problem in roadside work zones and drivers should put their phones away and pay attention, Acres adds. The goal is to ensure that all roadside workers can go home safely to their families at the end of the day.

“Every time you drive through a roadside work zone anywhere in the Kitimat-Stikine region, you’re not just passing cones and barriers. You’re in someone’s work place,” says Acres.
