Northern Health has recently expanded its Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) program, bringing crucial support to communities that have often faced barriers in accessing mental health services. This expansion marks a significant milestone in addressing the needs of young individuals experiencing early signs of psychosis.
Chantelle Wilson: “The importance of this work can’t be overstated. Early, integrated, and culturally safe support can be life-changing for young individuals living with psychosis. This investment is allowing us to expand and enhance our EPI program to ensure the best outcomes for those in the North, including in rural and remote communities.”
The program has expanded from its initial location in Prince George to now encompassing services in Terrace, Dawson Creek, Prince Rupert, and Fort St. John, along with surrounding areas. This expansion has not only increased accessibility but has also led to a remarkable rise in referrals and clients served.
Between 2020-21 and 2023-24, Northern Health reported a staggering 106% increase in referrals and over 200% growth in the number of clients served.
This initiative has been bolstered by the hiring of seventeen new EPI staff members dedicated to supporting the expanded services. These professionals play a critical role in providing comprehensive care, from initial assessment to ongoing support.
Northern Health’s commitment goes beyond numbers. By integrating services into local communities and enhancing cultural sensitivity, the program aims to create a supportive environment where individuals and families feel empowered on their journey towards recovery.
As Northern Health continues to lead in innovative mental health care solutions, the expansion of the Early Psychosis Intervention program stands as a testament to proactive and inclusive healthcare strategies in Northern BC
