The wildfire on Fire Mountain Road, which was previously classified as “Out of Control,” has now been downgraded to “Being Held.” This status indicates that the fire is expected to remain within its current perimeter due to ongoing control efforts. As of August 19, 2024, the fire has burned 2.2 hectares since it was first discovered on August 17, 2024.
Recent developments include the completion of danger tree assessment and falling by August 18, 2024, at 4:15 p.m. Firefighters are now focusing on securing the fire’s perimeter with hose, with the assistance of a heavy-lift helicopter. Earlier in the day, at 10:15 a.m., crews had gained access to the fire, assessed and removed danger trees, and established a hoselay around the area. A water tender is also on-site to aid in firefighting efforts.
Initial response to the fire on August 17 included the deployment of an airtanker, which made two retardant drops, and the Immediate Attack Crew, who remain on-site. There are currently no threats to structures.
A total of 19 firefighters from BC Wildfire Service, the Haisla Fire Department, and the Kitimat Fire Department are involved in managing the fire. At this time, there are no evacuation orders, alerts, or area restrictions in place.
The fire is suspected to have been started by human activity, either accidentally or intentionally.
