Premier David Eby announced a new tax cut plan on Sunday, promising $1,000 annually for the average family, starting next year. He emphasized that over 90% of British Columbians will benefit, providing crucial relief amid rising inflation and interest rates. Eby criticized John Rustad’s proposal, which would leave families waiting up to eighteen months for support, calling it inadequate.
Eby’s plan will exempt an additional $10,000 of individual income from taxes, delivering over $1,000 in savings for households and more than $500 for individuals. By 2025, the tax cut will come as a direct rebate, ensuring prompt assistance. In contrast, Rustad’s scheme would delay benefits until 2029 and serve fewer people. Eby reminded supporters of Rustad’s past tax cuts for the wealthy while ordinary families faced increased costs. “We can’t afford to take that risk again,” Eby stated, pledging to help British Columbians get ahead.
