Voters in Quesnel, BC, have approved a significant loan for a new firehall in Red Bluff. In a recent referendum, 273 votes were cast in favor, while 114 opposed the measure, resulting in a turnout of about 12% from the 2,200 homes in the Quesnel Fringe Fire Protection Service area.
The Cariboo Regional District will now move forward with plans to borrow up to $3.25 million for the construction. The loan is set to be paid off over 30 years, leading to an increase in residential property taxes of approximately $21.40 per $100,000 of assessed value. This means that homeowners with an average property valued at $330,000 can expect their taxes to rise by around $70.62 annually.
The existing Red Bluff Firehall, built in 1981, is no longer adequate for the growing community and changing firefighting standards. The new facility aims to better serve the areas of Red Bluff, Dragon Lake, Richbar, and South Quesnel. With this approval, the district plans to begin the design process and put the construction contract out for tender soon.
