Kitimat council has approved new terms of reference for its housing committee, reigniting debate among councillors over its focus and representation. The motion passed with a lone dissenting vote from Councillor Graham Pitzel, who criticized the committee for prioritizing low-income housing at the expense of broader community needs. Pitzel argued the committee was unnecessary, given the existence of other housing-related bodies.
The revised mandate for the housing committee, which last met in 2022, maintains its advisory role to the council, focusing on affordable housing, rental housing support, and public engagement. Councillor Michelle Martins, who introduced the motion, emphasized the urgent need to address Kitimat’s growing housing crisis, which, while distinct, mirrors issues faced across the province. She countered Pitzel’s argument, asserting the committee had historically addressed a wide range of housing issues.
Councillor Gerry Leibel strongly defended the committee’s focus on low-income housing, stressing the responsibility to support lower-income residents who are vital to the local economy. Councillor Terry Marlau, while backing the motion, raised concerns about the committee’s size and called for a review to enhance efficiency.
The committee’s first meeting is scheduled for mid-2025, as district staff work to streamline its membership while ensuring diverse representation.
