Terrace city council has temporarily relaxed parking restrictions around the newly opened Ksyen Regional Hospital due to ongoing parking issues. With only 70 spots available at the hospital’s main entrance, drivers have been parking on both sides of Tetrault Street, creating congestion and safety risks. In response, the city has allowed parking on the west side of Tetrault and part of Haugland Avenue from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, effective until April.
The move comes after Northern Health requested the change, but council members expressed frustration over the lack of adequate planning for hospital parking. Concerns about narrow roads, emergency access, and snow clearing were raised, with some councillors criticizing the oversight.
Northern Health has said additional parking will be available once the Mills Memorial Hospital building is demolished next year. They also explored options like parking at a nearby church and the Keith Avenue Mall, but both were deemed unfeasible.
While the parking relaxation provides short-term relief, the council has urged Northern Health to find a more permanent solution to the parking challenges.
