Workers at Red Chris Mine in Dease Lake, BC, have ratified a historic union contract with 99% approval, setting a new standard for camp workers’ wages and conditions in the province.
The agreement, reached with UNITE HERE Local 40, includes a wage increase of over 40% over the next 18 months. By the end of the contract, housekeepers at the mine will earn more than $30 per hour. The contract also addresses workload issues, ensuring more equitable and manageable work schedules for employees.
The successful vote follows months of negotiations after workers unionized in April, culminating in a strike vote in October to demonstrate solidarity. This achievement represents a significant milestone for camp workers in BC, particularly in the resource and hospitality sectors.
The Red Chris Mine, located in the province’s “Golden Triangle,” is owned by Newmont, one of the largest gold mining companies in the world.
UNITE HERE Local 40, which represents around 1,000 camp hospitality workers, continues to advocate for better conditions, with workers at three Horizon North camps near Fort St. John recently joining the union.
