Prince Rupert RCMP have laid charges in connection with a Christmas Day arson that forced the evacuation of an apartment building. On December 25, 2024, at 1:42 a.m., officers responded to a noise complaint at an apartment complex on Sherbrooke Ave. While investigating, the officer heard fire alarms and began evacuating residents. The Prince Rupert Fire Department quickly controlled the blaze, and fortunately, no one was injured.
An investigation led by the RCMP, with assistance from the Fire Commissioner’s Office and Forensic Identification Section, determined the fire was deliberately set. As a result, 30-year-old Garon Michael Dennis Weir has been arrested and charged with Arson – Disregard for Human Life. He remains in police custody.
RCMP praised the community’s response, noting the quick actions of first responders likely prevented a much worse outcome. The fire displaced 100 residents, and RCMP are asking anyone with information to contact Prince Rupert RCMP at 250-624-2136.
