Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre addressed the U.S. tariff issue during a press conference in Vancouver yesterday. Poilievre condemned the tariffs, calling them “unjustified” and emphasizing that Canada will not be “the 51st state.” He outlined a multi-point plan to mitigate the economic impact, including building alliances with U.S. workers, targeting Canadian-made alternatives to U.S. products, eliminating inter-provincial trade barriers, and cutting taxes. Poilievre also reiterated his call for Canada to tap into its full potential and empower entrepreneurs.
During the conference, Poilievre made further inaccurate claims about Canada’s energy exports, suggesting the country had been forced to sell oil to the U.S. at discounted prices, despite increasing exports to Asia, particularly after the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion. He also proposed rallying U.S. allies in key states to push back against the tariffs. Poilievre concluded by stressing that Canada’s relationship with the U.S. remains strong, despite political tensions.
