The City of Prince Rupert is addressing concerns about the future of the Prince Rupert Library. With aging infrastructure and limited funding, the City is exploring options to improve library services while managing urgent financial priorities.
Last year, the Library Board requested funding for a new facility, but with $700 million in critical infrastructure needs, securing funds for a new library remains unlikely. One option under review is joining the Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) system, which could provide improved services and resources. VIRL is currently assessing the library’s condition and may present a proposal later this year.
The City emphasizes that the library will not be abolished and remains committed to supporting its renewal. No decisions have been made, and community input, including from groups like the Prince Rupert District Teachers’ Union, will be considered before any steps are taken. The goal is to enhance library services for the community while balancing financial realities.
