The 65th All Native Basketball Tournament is underway in Prince Rupert, running from February 7 to 15. Originally, the Heiltsuk Nation was set to lead the opening ceremonies, but after a death in their community, the Gitxaała Nation stepped in with just two weeks’ notice.
Gitxaała leader and elder Ernie Bolton said he felt prepared for the responsibility, having attended cultural dance practices and worked alongside Warren Nelson. While there were some challenges, especially in honoring the legacies of elders who have passed, the community quickly came together.
Bolton expressed deep pride in representing Gitxaała culture on such an important stage, saying the group was always ready to step up. One highlight of the evening’s performance includes Bolton’s 98-year-old sister, whose teachings and presence will be recognized during the event.
Excitement is high as teams and nations gather for the tournament, which remains a major celebration of Indigenous sport and culture. Bolton looks forward to sharing the moment with everyone in attendance.
