The federal and provincial governments have announced a significant enhancement to the Canada-BC Housing Benefit, aimed at providing additional support to survivors of gender-based violence. The federal government is investing nearly $37 million over four years, matched by the Province of B.C. This funding will assist nearly 1,700 individuals or households, including women, children, and 2SLGBTQI+ people, who are transitioning from abusive situations or facing severe housing needs.
The benefit, which provides an average of $600 per month, is designed to help survivors secure stable rental housing in the private market. Eligibility is based on income, family size, and rent costs, with the program specifically targeting those experiencing financial abuse or difficulty accessing other support.
This funding is part of the broader Canada Housing Benefit program, which aims to reduce housing insecurity among vulnerable populations. The investment reflects ongoing efforts by both levels of government to break the cycle of violence and ensure survivors have the stability they need to rebuild their lives.
