Prince Rupert City Council has waived professional fees for physicians in an effort to improve recruitment and retention. At its March 10 meeting, council unanimously approved the measure, refunding 2025 fees already paid. The move aims to address the local doctor shortage and support accessible healthcare. The fee waiver, costing the city less than $2,000, is a small step to attract and retain physicians, officials say.
In other council business, a new Good Neighbour Bylaw is moving forward to address community nuisances, including overgrown vegetation, graffiti, noise, and vacant properties. The bylaw sets stricter standards for property upkeep and introduces penalties ranging from $100 to $10,000, with additional fines for repeat offenders.
Council approved first and second readings, with an amendment shifting nighttime noise restrictions from 10 p.m. to 9 p.m. The bylaw still requires final approval, expected in early April.
